Awareness Hikes:
PICKETPOST
MOUNTAIN - On Saturday FEBRUARY 17, 2007, Ted
Stratton, Sarah Garvey, Brian & Kim Beck, Nancy
Malmberg, John Peel, and Beverly Malmberg & Rick
Heffernon along with Rascal the dog, hiked Picketpost
Mountain located west of Superior. The hike begins just
south of U.S. 60, not far from the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.
An unofficial trail leads to the top of the mountain,
surprisingly rugged in places, requiring some hand-over-foot
climbing and route-finding skill. It's not for the casual
weekend hikers.

SPUR
CROSS RANCH CONSERVATION AREA
On Sunday DECEMBER 31, 2006, Susie and Theo Kurrus,
Nancy Malmberg and John Peel, along with Chaco the dog
hiked approximately 5.5 miles in the Spur Cross Ranch
Conservation Area at Cave Creek, followed by a fabulous
tail gate luncheon prepared by Susie. The trails hiked
creating a loop back to the trailhead were the Tortuga,
Elephant Mountain, Limestone and Spur Cross. There is
a fee of $3 per person at the trail head, and worth
every cent.

NATIONAL MONUMENT
DECEMBER 5, 2006 - Eight Friends of the Society spent nearly 4 hours on a unique full moon guided tour to the Upper Ruins. The hike was planned
by Ted Stratton and guided by National Monument Ranger
Jan Harper and her assistant Jim Wells. Other hikers were Spring Zutes, Mitch Simons, Zoe
Ludski, Nancy Malmberg, John Peel, Anna Poulos, and
Linda Asimakis.

COYOTE
BUTTES
JANUARY 28, 2007 - Spanning the Utah -
Arizona border, this unique area was little known before the mid 1970's but
is now quite popular because its signature formation called
'The Wave', a large ravine between eroded sandstone
domes containing
thin, swirling strata. This wonderland is a photographer's paradise!
Because the BLM considers the
formations to be particularly delicate, Coyote Buttes
is subject to fees and entry limitations, with only
10 people allowed to visit each day. Ted Stratton fortunately
secured a permit 3 months in advance.
Volunteers Anna Poulos, Rick Heffernon, and Bev
Malmberg accompanied him along with Rascal.
